The nation’s first residential drone delivery program began late last week in Christiansburg, Virginia. The pilot program could pave the way for drone delivery service in the United States.
At a home in Christiansburg, the drone zoomed into view, hovered over the lawn and lowered a package neatly into the grass.
There were three flights on this day, marking the launch of an air delivery service from Wing, an offshoot of Google’s parent company that has been working with the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership since 2016.

In time, drones can deliver small packages, like medicine in minutes, but Blanks says overcoming the obstacles are among the hardest problems in the industry and the cooperating “citizen scientists” in Christiansburg, will help write the book.
