The Henrico County Board of Supervisors is meeting this afternoon on a proposal to build a “world class” sports arena at Virginia Center Commons.  Officials believe it may be a home run.

The board is being briefed right now on what administration officials believe is a winner.

Neil Luther:  Well we have come back with a detailed proposal from the Rebkee Group to place this facility at Virginia Center Commons.

Neil Luther is Director of Henrico County Recreation and Parks:

Luther:  They have locked up roughly 70 acres of the mall itself, so in terms of location, we couldn’t be more pleased, it hits every mark we were hoping to hit.

Virginia Center is a failing mall in a prime location with a substantial infrastructure and parking already in place.  There were six original proposals, whittled down to three and finally to one.

Luther:  Can’t be matched by anything else we’ve seen.

Tonight, the board is expected to vote on a resolution to proceed with negotiations with Rebkee.  If all goes well, Luther says they could break ground first quarter of next year.
