Richmond Police say two statues of Confederate Generals on Monument Avenue were vandalized overnight.

At 4:30 Tuesday morning a police officer found the message “This is racist” sprayed painted on the Jefferson Davis monument. Hours later, police also found the Stonewall Jackson monument, located at the corner of Arthur Ashe Boulevard and Monument Avenue, had also been vandalized.

A spokesperson for Richmond Police said they do not have a suspect at this time, but detectives are investigating.

The vandalism comes just one day before a planned demonstration in the Capitol calling for local control over the future of Confederate monuments in Virginia.
