Gov. Ralph Northam declared a State of Emergency in Richmond Wednesday ahead of a massive rally planned on Capitol Square Monday.

Thousands are expected to protest new control measures proposed by the new Democratic majority.

The Governor’s decision is based on what law enforcement officials call “credible threats of violent extremism.” State officials say law enforcement have identified white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of state militia groups to attend.

The emergency declaration is temporary. It runs from Friday, January 17 at 5 p.m. to Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m. Firearms and all weapons will be banned from the Capitol grounds.

Gov. Northam declared this state of emergency through an executive order.
