Bill Addressing Housing Shortage Shot Down in Subcommittee

A shot of the State Capitol building in Richmond.

An ambitious proposal aimed to address housing shortages in Virginia — was shot down in a subcommittee on Thursday.

Del. Ibraheem Samirah’s bill would have allowed developers to build multi-family housing, like duplexes, in neighborhoods currently zoned for single-family homes.

Advocates say this would let more families move to the suburbs, which are otherwise unaffordable to working class people.

The subcommittee also turned down another one of Samirah’s bills, which would have legalized building accessory dwelling units and tiny homes across the state.
