A lawsuit was filed today by at least 20 state attorneys general against Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in response to reports on how the USPS was fulfilling his - and President Donald Trump’s - goal of cutting back on costs.
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is one of them. Speaking to press on Tuesday, he called DeJoy’s recent changes to the Postal Service’s operations a “voter suppression tactic.”
He also said DeJoy’s decisions have been harmful to everyday Americans living through a pandemic.
“Those policies will also hurt Virginians and Americans who rely on the postal system for medicine, for packages,” Herring said.
While testifying before Congress Tuesday, DeJoy said USPS will delay any further operational changes.
“To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded,” DeJoy said.
Such initiatives, including the removal of mail sorting machines and public mailboxes, have already drawn controversy in recent weeks.
