Here’s a recap of the top stories on the morning of Tuesday, June 1, 2021:

  • The Virginia War Memorial’s 65th annual Memorial Day ceremony was open to the public yesterday. The state eased physical distancing and capacity restrictions on Friday. Whittney Evans reports.

  • During COVID-19, a Virginia law against wearing masks has been paused. But that could change as soon as June 30th, when the current state of emergency is set to expire. Yasmine Jumaa spoke with experts about the benefits of masking up, the possible legal repercussions and what role the state should play.

  • Today is the deadline to sign up for Chesterfield County public school’s “Virtual Academy”. The district is offering the academy for K-through-8th grade as an alternative to in-person classes in the fall.  Parents or guardians must register at the district’s website. But, officials say, completing the form doesn't guarantee admission to the program. June 1st is also the deadline to sign up forsummer school classes.

  • Today is the two-year anniversary of the Virginia Beach mass shooting that killed 12 people and injured four more. All weekend there have been tributes honoring the victims. Sam Turken, from our partner station W-H-R-V, has the story on one of them -- a new oyster reef in the Lynnhaven River dedicated to Mary Louise Gayle.
