Here’s a recap of the top stories on the morning of Friday, October 15, 2021:

  • The Virginia Redistricting Commission started work on congressional maps yesterday. After failing to agree on state legislative districts, the commissioners hoped changing their focus would help. But as Patrick Larsen reports, old disagreements have come up again.

  • You can now see how many people in the state have received their third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine or booster shots. The  Virginia Department of Health updated its vaccination dashboard yesterday to include this data. Figures for third and booster doses are grouped together, because health officials say it’s not possible to differentiate between the two.  As of October 13, nearly 243,000 boosters or third doses have been reported. About 815,000 Virginians are eligible for them.

  • A Latino-focused hunger relief organization, that started during the pandemic, is expanding its operations. The Waymakers Foundation opened a new distribution facility and office space on Hull Street Road in Chesterfield County. It’s in the same shopping center the organization previously operated in. According to  Richmond Bizsense, the nonprofit’s new space will help it continue to meet the growing demands of hundreds of families in the Richmond-metro area.

  • A three-part series was published this week by The Richmond Times Dispatch, detailing the history, current climate and admissions rules at the Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond. VPM’s Megan Pauly spoke with Kenya Hunter about her series.

Ian M. Stewart previously was the transportation reporter and fill-in anchor for VPM News.
