Six people were shot, one fatally, Friday night in Chester.

Chesterfield County Police were called to a residence in the 10900 block of Stepney Road at about 10:20 p.m., according to a news release.

During a Saturday press conference, police said the gathering was a graduation party and that about 50 shots were fired during the incident.

When officers arrived at the subdivision between Thomas Dale High School and Route 288, they “attempted to render emergency aid” to a person who had suffered a gunshot wound, according to a department news release. Taborri J. Carter, 20, subsequently died at the scene.

The news release also said that the five people who suffered gunshot wounds were “transported to either area hospitals or other locations with non-life-threatening” injuries. Two additional people suffered injuries that were not firearm-related, police said.

Officials have not identified the others who were injured, but said their ages range between 16 and 21. Watch Commander David Sumner told VPM News that the resident of the home where the party was taking place also has not been identified.

Police did not say if there were one or multiple shooters, but found four different kinds of shell casings at the scene.

Initially, media was told officers arrived at Weybridge Road at about 9:30 p.m., following reports of shots being fired. Stepney and Weybridge roads intersect.

The investigation is ongoing, Sumner said.

There have been more than 200 mass shootings so far in 2022, according to the  Gun Violence Archive. Mass shootings are when four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.
