Kyiv City Ballet stops in Hampton Roads as war rages at home

On Feb. 23, members of the Kyiv City Ballet got on a plane to Paris. They didn’t know it at the time, but their flight was one of the last out of Ukraine before Russia invaded. They had gone to France for a three-week tour, but couldn’t return home and ended up staying much longer — through earlier this month. In the meantime, they performed to sold-out crowds throughout Europe.

Governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration proposed new guidance for how Virginia public schools should treat transgender students, shifting the focus from the rights of children to the rights of their parents. If approved, the 2022 Model Policies On The Privacy, Dignity And Respect For All Students And Parents In Virginia’s Public Schools would require students to use restrooms that align with the sex they were assigned at birth, “except to the extent that federal law otherwise requires.” VPM News legal reporter and editor Whittney Evans spoke to education reporter Megan Pauly about how we got to this point, and what experts have to say.
