Layla Knight, 1, arrived at the garden dressed in pink from head to toe with her mother, Lorna, and grandmother Sunisa Polishuk. Lorna’s leash made sure that Layla didn’t wander off as she played with the blooming tulips.

At a pond nearby, 6-year-old James Koca met with fellow 6-year-old twins Abram and Merrill Cullen. The three were exuberant as they played with clay from the pond. Their party ended when Abram got his shoes wet.

Shaban Athuman was born in a Tanzanian refugee camp and grew up in Roanoke, where he fell in love with photography.
