Law enforcement responded to a call about an individual trying to enter homes.

Chesterfield County Police shot and killed a man early Saturday afternoon.

Law enforcement was called to the 1200 block of Wycliff Court near the Powhite Parkway before 1 p.m., according to a CCPD press release.

The release said police received reports that a man had accessed a garage and was attempting to enter the home. The same man reportedly tried to enter other residences in the area and in one instance cut through a window screen, according to police.

When officers arrived, the man was in the street carrying a hatchet, CCPD said. Officers spoke with the individual in an attempt to resolve the situation, according to the release, and then used a Taser after the individual declined to comply. The taser “was not effective.”

Officers continued to try to negotiate with the man, police said, before he began to approach the officers while still carrying the hatchet and was shot by law enforcement.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers who shot the man have been placed on administrative leave until after an investigation of the shooting, according to WTVR.
