How Virginia's Latinos voted in 2024
Nationwide, a majority of Latino voters opted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. But 43% of Latinos backed former President Donald Trump, up from 35% in 2020 and 28% in 2016.
VPM News spoke to several Latino voters in the Richmond area about Trump’s growing Latino support and what motivated them to choose a particular candidate.
Beato Ortiz Hernández, a business owner and community organizer who immigrated from Mexico at 15, said he voted with his fellow immigrants in mind — a sentiment shared by many of the voters VPM News talked to. That led him to vote for Harris despite disagreeing with her on several other issues.
“I know there are more people coming up who want the same opportunities for themselves,” he said. “That is why I cannot turn my back on my migrant community.”
He added: “Separating families is something cruel.”
