House Speaker Don Scott honored at General Assembly reception
It was another important week at the Capitol complex, with Virginia’s legislative session in full swing.
Early in the week, the state Senate voted to advance proposed amendments that would enshrine marriage equality and abortion rights in the Virginia constitution, and automatically restore voting rights to people who have served felony sentences.
Tuesday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s Day 1 actions on federal workers, which will affect about 150,000 government employees living in Virginia.
And Friday, Youngkin and members of both chambers gathered to unveil “Out of the Shadow,” an exhibit commemorating the Black people who served in Virginia’s government during Reconstruction. The event also honored House Speaker Don Scott (D–Portsmouth) — the first Black man to lead the House of Delegates in its history.
