Ryan’s exit met with surprise around the commonwealth
University of Virginia President Jim Ryan spoke to a crowd of supporters gathered outside his Carr’s Hill residence Friday, confirming that he had resigned after a pressure campaign by the US Department of Justice related to an investigation into UVA’s diversity practices.
“I love the University of Virginia deeply, and it's because of all of you,” Ryan said. “Regardless of my role, I will continue to do whatever I can to support this place and continue to make it the best place it can be."
Ryan’s exit sparked strong reactions across the commonwealth, including many from Virginia Democrats — several of whom are UVA alums — who issued public condemnations of the decision.
