Every morning since I returned from Colombia back in December, I wake up with an urgent craving: a sweet cup of café con leche and an arepa (a Colombian staple like a corn cake) filled with egg.
In addition to having a diet of delicious and incredibly nutritious foods, Colombians are raised on a healthy diet of musical variety. It's no surprise some of the biggest international Latin stars — Shakira, Juanes — come from that country.
For nearly two weeks, I traveled throughout Colombia with my Alt.Latino co-host Felix and the team of PBS's Music Voyager, tapping into this wealth of musicians and bands. For Music Voyager this was nothing new — they spend most of the year trotting the globe in search of amazing music.
We interviewed up and coming acts like electronic bands Bomba Estereo and Systema Solar and such legends as salsero Joe Arroyo and Toto La Momposina, queen of Afro-Caribbean song. We met up with trailblazers like the rock band Aterciopelados; folk heroes like Fonseca; and even squeezed in a phone conversation with international superstar Juanes.
This week on the show we are joined by our travel buddy Jacob Edgar, host of Music Voyager. We picked the highlights of the trip, the live performances that are forever etched in our minds. You'll also find footage below.
