Our next Live at the Village Vanguard concert (npr.org/villagevanguard) features the Fabian Almazan trio, with a string quartet. They'll be playing music from the young pianist's excellent debut album, Personalities, and maybe some other surprises. We'll have a live video webcast Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. ET.
Before the performance, Almazan will join us for an on-camera discussion of his work — especially his writing for strings in a jazz context. Like his mentor (and bandleader) Terence Blanchard, Almazan has done some writing for films as well, and we'll talk a little about that.
On Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. ET — that's two hours before showtime — we'll open up a little video window where you can listen to our interview with Fabian and Lara Pellegrinelli. We'll also have a live chat box in this space where you can ask him some questions. (You can also leave questions in the comment field.) After the show, he'll join us on camera again for a post-game interview.
While you're waiting for all that, here are some sample scores of Almazan's work. (Click to download.) In that zip file, among other things, is sheet music for the soundtrack to the film First Match. And after the jump, have a listen to two examples of Almazan's writing for trio + string quartet, from Personalities. Check out his arrangement of the Adagio movement from Shostakovich's String Quartet Op. 118, No. 10, and the award-winning title track.
