In a note to newsroom staff Vice President for News Programming Eric Marrapodi, announced this staffing update:

Hi all, After a nationwide search we are pleased to announce Jay Shaylor will be the next Executive Producer of Morning Edition and Up First. Jay is a strong editorial leader and a gifted audience-first producer. He joins NPR after an award-winning career leading some of the nation’s premier broadcasts. Jay previously served as the Executive Producer for The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell as the broadcast moved from New York to Washington, DC. He led the team through the pandemic and helped the newscast reach its most competitive position in decades. During his tenure, the show was awarded a duPont-Columbia award for a series about sexual assault in the military. Jay also served as an Executive Producer for the 2020 elections and during CBS’s Special Coverage on January 6th - work that earned an Emmy nomination. Prior to CBS, Jay was the Executive Producer for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. At CNN he helped guide the newscast through coverage of the first Trump administration. Under his leadership the show landed big news-making interviews, helped set the news agenda for the network, and garnered numerous awards. Jay is no stranger to early mornings. Before coming to CNN, he was the overnight Senior Producer for Good Morning America working to ensure the best show aired across the country every morning. While Jay was in that role, GMA topped NBC’s Today Show in the ratings for the first time in 16 years. Most recently, he has been doing strategic media consulting for news networks. The hiring committee was impressed with Jay’s audience-focused approach and how he built esprit de corps among the teams he led. “At a time when our country is divided and the truth seems up for debate, Morning Edition remains a light in the darkness. For more than 45 years, the Morning Edition team has helped set the agenda for the day—informing, engaging and delighting listeners fairly and accurately,” Jay says. “I’m excited to be joining this iconic broadcast and its companion podcast, Up First, at this critical moment, helping the team to report the news that matters to our listeners without fear or favor.” Jay is local to DC, where he lives with his wife and two children. He is a native of South Carolina. I’d also like to recognize Kelley Dickens for the great job she has done serving as our Interim EP. We are happy to report she will remain a key part of our leadership team as the Deputy Executive Producer for ME. Please join me in giving Jay a warm welcome and thanking Kelley. Jay begins on March 3rd. Eric
