In a note to newsroom staff, NPR's acting Chief Content Officer, Senior Vice President and Editor in Chief, Edith Chapin, made the following announcement:
Hi all,
We are thrilled to announce that Thomas Evans will be joining NPR as Managing Editor, Editorial Review. In this role, he will lead the creation of the “Backstop,” the new system we announced in May as part of a larger effort to enhance our editorial operations as a unified Content Division.
Thomas served as Vice President and London Bureau Chief at CNN for nearly eight years, where he was responsible for CNN International’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. He oversaw the operations and editorial work of 17 bureaus and approximately 500 staff.
Before that role, Thomas had a long career as an award-winning field producer, specializing in deployments to war zones and other hostile environments. He ran CNN’s Iraq bureau and oversaw bureaus in Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan and elsewhere. He started out as a producer for Anderson Cooper in New York and in the field, covering everything from domestic politics to Hurricane Katrina.
Thomas’ years of experience in the field, in often challenging environments, and as an editorial leader in a complex organization give him unique insight into the promise of what the Backstop can be: an extra layer of protection around our journalists and content creators. He also knows what it can’t be, and that is, a roadblock to you doing your best work. He is committed to working with all of you to figure out the best approach for this organization.
Thomas will report to me, in my role as Editor in Chief, with a dotted line to Collin Campbell, SVP of Podcasting Strategy and Franchise Development.
He starts on Monday, September 9th, and will be based in DC. His first tasks will be hiring the rest of the team and getting to know all of you. Please join me in welcoming him to NPR!
Thanks, as always,
Edith
