On September 30th, NPR is launching Stress Less: A Quest to Reclaim Your Calm, a special five-part multi-platform series that delves into the science of stress and resilience. Each week, NPR health correspondent Allison Aubrey will air stories about people who are successfully using resilience and coping skills to thrive amid a variety of life’s challenges. Segments will begin airing on NPR’s Morning edition and will be available online and in the NPR Life Kit podcast feed. Audience members will also be able to sign up for five weekly newsletters from NPR that explain the science of stress and offer tips for practicing resilience skills.
As an added bonus, NPR is collaborating with Northwestern University to bring their on-line stress-reduction course to our audiences. Participants are invited to take an online course and join a study, led by Dr. Judith Moskowitz, a professor and researcher at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, who has been on the forefront of resilience research for 20-plus years. The course teaches eight skills for managing stress and increasing positive emotion. After the series NPR will report the findings and effectiveness of Northwestern’s research - however, the study will remain open beyond the five-week run of the series.

“This series has solidified my belief that we can all learn to be more joyful, more calm, and more content,” said Aubrey. “Sometimes the quest for positivity can sound trite but there is science behind this work. Practicing these skills, as I've reported them, is making a big difference. Even my husband has noticed a positive shift in my mood.”
If you want to build your resilience muscles, participants are encouraged to sign up for the Stress Less newsletter. Over five weeks, NPR will introduce you to powerful tools and strategies that have been proven to help well-being. Whether you're an active participant in the study or a listener who is curious about the science of stress management - this series has something for everyone.
“People can absolutely be taught to increase their positive emotions, even when things seem pretty bleak,” said Dr. Moskowitz. “We are so excited to be working with NPR to bring these skills to their listeners to help them cope with any kind of stress they might be experiencing right now.”
