Richmond, Va. - Richmonders can catch the musical stylings of one of VPM Music’s classical hosts during “A Night of Chamber Music with Mike Goldberg and Friends” live at VPM on August 14, 2019 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The concert, which will feature a trio of local musicians, including Goldberg on clarinet, is the first event in a new concert series sponsored by the Richmond-based public media company.
The August 14th program will include selections by Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Camille Saint-Saëns, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Michele Mangani. Joining Mr. Golberg will be Charles Staples on piano and Rebecca Gilmore on cello.
“I’m extremely excited to bring our listeners the opportunity to hear an evening of live chamber music,” says Goldberg. “It’s a thrill for me to be performing with a couple of my talented colleagues, as we kick off a brand-new concert series highlighting the variety of genres we feature on the station. It’s the first of what I hope will be many classical offerings featuring a wide variety of chamber music.”
This event, and the concerts that follow, will allow VPM to deepen its connections to Richmond public radio listeners by bringing the music straight to them - live and in person. They will also offer an opportunity to showcase and celebrate local talent, and the stations are proud to have Mike Goldberg and Friends performing at the inaugural concert.
"We frequently feature a lot of good music performances from around our region - from the Richmond Symphony to small ensembles performing live in our studio,” explains Bill Miller, Vice President and General Manager of VPM Public Radio. “But it is a special treat to be able to bring one of our own multi-talented hosts to the stage to demonstrate his musical skills to an in-person audience. It is always a pleasure to listen to Mike's selections from our large library; I am looking forward to hearing him perform from his own, personal repertoire."
Included in the ticket price are a dessert reception and post-concert photo opportunities with VPM Music host and performer Mike Goldberg.

About the Musicians:
Rebecca Gilmore (cello) has been a member of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for 20 years and serves as Assistant Principal Cellist under the baton of JoAnn Falletta. Ms. Gilmore is co-founder of the Ambrosia Quartet, which has recorded Dr. Adolphus Hailstork’s music CD “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” with Albany Records. She serves as the Virginia Symphony’s representative to the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians.
Mike Goldberg (clarinet) hosts weekday afternoon classical and weekend “Breakfast Classics” on WCVE Music (107.3 FM and 93.1 FM). He performs regularly with many local ensembles, is an Adjunct Instructor of Clarinet at Randolph-Macon College, and serves as clarinet instructor at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford County. Mr. Goldberg is the Music Director and Conductor for the Central Virginia Wind Symphony, a group of the most talented high school musicians from across the region. In his “other” career, he is a meteorologist for WTVR-CBS 6.
Charles Staples (piano) has been a soloist in concertos with the Richmond Symphony, the Congress of Strings, the North Carolina Symphony and University of Richmond Orchestra. He recently performed the Brahms 1st Piano Concerto with the Richmond Philharmonic and will make his sixth appearance with them this fall, playing the Rachmaninoff 2nd Concerto. Mr. Staples has performed recitals in New York's Town Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. He teaches on the piano faculties of Virginia Commonwealth University and the GreenSpring International Academy of Music. Mr. Staples serves as the Director of Music Ministries at Trinity United Methodist Church.
