Why Science Matters to Audio Engineers and Sound Designers?

Carlos Chafin

Carlos Chafin, audio engineer and sound designer and president of In Your Ear Studios in Richmond, Virginia talks about why science matters to him.

"Science Matters because science and art are so closely intertwined. Art is so dependent on scientific principles and our understanding of them gives an artist a better grasp of their tools. When we first started recording, it was on magnetic tape, and tape was tough. When you wanted to edit it, you had to use razor blades and tape to stick it back together. Computers have sped that process up dramatically. And the benefits of being able to digitize sound and manipulate them spawned whole new businesses and techniques that have made people not only interested in what we do, but able to actually do it."
