3 Nonprofits Impacting Charlottesville

PB&J Fund participants gather around a cooking instructor.

Did you know that Charlottesville has more nonprofits per capita than New York City? Over the past 12 years, Charlottesville Inside-Out has showcased organizations and people working hard to make a difference in our community. In the new season, Terri Allard will introduce groups focused on improving literacy, promoting the arts and encouraging entrepreneurship. With so many people doing great work in our area, it’s hard to narrow the list down, but here are three suggestions for nonprofits to keep your eye on. Learn more about them below and enjoy a brand-new lineup of CVIO episodes at the new 8 p.m. time slot beginning Thursday, January 30 on VPM PBS.

Heather Heyer FoundationThe Heather Heyer Foundation was created to honor Heather Heyer, a young civil rights activist, who dedicated her life to promoting equal rights for all people. The foundation has established a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to individuals passionate about positive social change. Scholarships will be awarded to those seeking a degree or certification in, but not limited to, law, paralegal studies, social work, social justice, and education.

Ben Hair Just Swim for LifeThe Ben Hair Just Swim for Life Foundation was established to honor the life of Benjamin Gordon Hair, who had been an avid swimmer since the age of 18 months. BH-JSL seeks to carry out Ben’s personal mission to keep children safe in the pool by raising awareness of the need and providing the motivation, systems, and tools to waterproof our community so that all children have basic swimming skills and are safe around water.

PB&J FundThe PB&J Fund was created in the belief that a healthy diet should be easily accessible to all kids, just like the most famous and basic childhood food of peanut butter and jelly. By working with community partners to provide healthy meals and teach cooking habits, The PB&J Fund aims to address kids’ nutritional needs at each stage of development.
