July is a great time to spend your evenings outdoors under the twinkle of stars and fireflies, while trying out a great new adventure! Several organizations are offering drive-in and outdoor movie options, as well as live music al fresco. And there are still several online options for classes, concerts, and tours that you can enjoy in your backyard or on your porch!
See below for a curated list of what our local arts & culture community has to offer.
1. A BLACK UNION SPY IN RICHMOND: WHO WAS MARY JANE RICHARDS?

Historic St. John’s Church is partnering with Richmond Battlefield Park and Civil War Trails, Inc. to host Park Ranger Nathan Hall as he gives a Virtual Bus Tour exploring the life of Civil War spy Mary Jane Richards, sometimes known as "Mary Bowser." Nathan shares his knowledge of Mary, tracing historical evidence of her life from the Van Lew House on Church Hill, her service as a Union agent in the Confederate capital, and determining whether the often told story that she worked for Jefferson Davis in the Confederate White House is really true. This is a free event but you must REGISTER to participate.
2. 4TH FRIDAY ART SHOWS AND OPENING RECEPTION

Art Works is excited to bring their new exhibits for the month: Mark Price’s “Many Faces,” and Theresa Armstrong’s “Evenings at North Bend,” a group exhibit from The Richmond Photography Meetup Group, and Tim Harper’s June exhibit “Deconstruct/Reconstruct” continues for another month. They offer two small receptions with live music at 6pm and 7pm. Please join us July 24th, for the opening reception. You must REGISTER to attend and don’t forget to wear your face mask!
3. DOREY PARK DRIVE-IN: ALADDIN

Henrico’s Dorey Park offers a FREE drive-in movie night, featuring the film Aladdin (2019) with Will Smith and Mena Massoud. Gates open at 7:30pm. Movie begins at 9pm. Spaces are limited and first come, first served.
4. JOHN MOE ON CROWDCAST

Partnering with St. Martin’s Press, The Fountain Bookstore brings John Moe, host and creator of the award-winning hit podcast, The Hilarious World of Depression. His latest book of the same name is a funny but honest look at his and others journeys with the disease. You must REGISTER to participate in this free event.
5. SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2020: JONATHAN AUSTIN JUGGLING & TRICKS

6. BEETHOVEN 2020 SUMMER SERIES ONLINE CONCERT

The Richmond Symphony is hosting an online weekly concert series this summer in collaboration with the University of Richmond Department of Music and VCU | School of the Arts | Department of Music. This year's theme is Beethoven, honoring his 250th birthday, and will be made up of six one-hour duets, featuring a single instrument paired with piano. These intimate performances will be live-streamed on a private, secure channel. Tickets for the online concert experience are $12 each or $60 for a subscription to all six! This week features Schuyler Slack on Cello and Ingrid Keller on the Piano. They will be playing Cello Sonata in A Major, Opus 69 and Cello Sonata in C Major, Opus 102, No. 1.
