Cooking Up Science with Miss America: "Fizzy Fun and Exploring Acid-Base Chemistry"

Miss America Camille Schrier and balloon

Home Learning  |  Cooking Up Science with Miss America

Episode 3: Do you think we can blow up a balloon using only ingredients from the pantry? Using simple, safe, at-home materials, we will explore the concepts of pH and acid-base chemistry and have some fizzy fun! With their signature gas-producing fizz, the acid-base reactions in this episode are both fun and functional. Not only will the reaction blow up a balloon, it also makes your bath bomb fizz in the tub. Join Miss America 2020 to cook up some science in your kitchen, and learn more about the chemistry of fizzy fun! Developed for students in grades 6- 10.

Produced by Camille Schrier, Miss America 2020, in partnership with VPM.

Virginia Standards of Learning (2018):

PS.3 The student will investigate and understand that matter has properties and is conserved in chemical and physical processes. Key ideas include:
a) pure substances can be identified based on their chemical and physical properties
b) pure substances can undergo physical and chemical changes that may result in a change of properties

CH.5 The student will investigate and understand that solutions behave in predictable and quantifiable ways. Key ideas include:
a) molar relationships determine solution concentration
d) pH and pOH quantify acid and base dissociation

Biology 6.8 a) Water-quality monitoring is the collection of water samples to analyze chemical and/or biological parameters. Simple parameters include pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and the presence of macroinvertebrate organisms.
