RVA’s powerful and vocal women are front and center this month! Check your local galleries, museums, and theatres for exhibits, performances, and programming surrounding the important contribution women make in this world every day. In addition to Women’s History Month, our local arts & culture community is offering some fantastic music and workshop opportunities to enjoy from home. And with Spring on the way, there are some outstanding outdoor events, too!
1. RECASTING THE VOTE: HOW WOMEN OF COLOR TRANSFORMED THE SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT

The story of the fight for woman suffrage is a familiar one, but there is more to the story. This talk, hosted by The Humanities Research Center at VCU, will reveal the hidden histories of the Native American, Chinese American, African American and Hispana suffragists who not only challenged women’s inequality but also fought against the racial prejudices of the age. It will offer a revealing look at an inspiring new history of woman suffrage. Register for this free event.

The In Your Ear Studio’s unofficial "studio band" is back for IYE Shockoe Sessions Live as Michael Hawkins and the Brotherhood! Michael Hawkins is a versatile and well-rounded virtuoso Jazz bassist, playing and writing in multiple sub-genres and on both acoustic and electric bass. Hawkins has recorded and toured extensively with acclaimed pianist Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Reed and John Hicks, saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jimmy Heath, Gary Bartz and Antonio Hart. The Lenten Series at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has existed for over seventy-five years and has hosted a wide range of preachers, speakers and lecturers, ranging from local rabbis to radical pastors with a national audience. It is intentionally held during Lent, traditionally a time of growth, self-reflection, and re-direction. This week’s speaker, Spencer Reece, is a published poet and Episcopal priest, presently serving as Priest-in-Charge at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jackson Heights, New York City, where he conducts services in both English and Spanish. Reece affirms the connection of the arts and spiritual life. Register for this free event.

Learn more about the documentary that has taken the opera world by storm. Unsung tells the stories of five opera singers as they rage, speak out, and adapt to life with nowhere to sing. Victory Opera hosts a Facebook Live behind-the-scenes discussion about this documentary.
