Virginia is creating new opportunities for students to explore pathways in STEM education and STEM careers through a new “ Game of STEM” poster and soon to be interactive game. STEM refers to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and how these topics work together in an interdisciplinary way, in both education and the real-world.
Since the Pandemic started, people and organizations have been looking for ways to help create excitement and enthusiasm around STEM, especially for our youth. This is because so many of our everyday experiences are tied to STEM. Whether it is understanding the statistics we see in the media, understanding the value of a mask and social distancing, or even the science behind a vaccine. Understanding STEM concepts and becoming STEM literate is more important than ever.
How important is STEM literacy to workforce development?
STEM jobs have been, on average, weathering the Pandemic better than many other jobs. STEM careers also tend to pay above other careers at similar education levels. Not every student needs to pursue a STEM career, but they need to understand the opportunities available to help them make informed career decisions. There are many misconceptions about STEM careers. One is that all STEM careers require a 4 -year degree, and the second is that STEM is computer science.
To help combat these misconceptions, The Virginia Department of Education , CodeVA, and the Virginia Association of Science Teachers have created a new way to engage youth in exploring the pathways and possibilities of STEM opportunities and careers. The “Game of STEM” is not quite and digital ggame yet – but currently it is a chance to use eye-catching visuals to pull you through a landscape of opportunities. A graphic poster illustrates pathways for STEM careers that require varying levels of education, from high school diplomas, certifications, associates and bachelor’s degrees, and graduate programs. It also shows a breadth of jobs and careers that expand across various professions and incorporate a wide range of passions and interests.
One side of this poster sized visual shows recommended coursework that will help youth look more closely at their options. They can explore how selecting specific pathways through their electives and course options in high school will best prepare them for a future that explores their interests or talents. Students can explore different careers, coursework, finances, and be encouraged to explore different options.
The “Game of STEM” poster is the first iteration of this project and is a great way to engage youth in schools with educators or guidance counselors. It is also is an excellent platform for families to explore together and discuss STEM options in class selection and careers. The poster can also be used by adults to help them consider their options as they explore career pathways. There are plans to evolve this content into an interactive gaming format designed to further engage people in STEM classes and career possibilities.
If we promote STEM well, our community will see STEM as a life-long venture and we will continue to see growth in STEM careers in Virginia.
What’s your pathway in the “ Game of STEM”?
