The Menuhin Competition Kicks-Off this Friday in Richmond

Fiona Khuong-Huu - Junior Semifinals Menuhin
Fiona Khuong-Huu from Japan/France/United States is a Junior Semi-Finalist in the Menuhin Competition.

The official start to the Menuhin Competition Richmond 2021 kicks off this Friday, May 14 at 7 a.m. with an in-person-only celebration concert from the Richmond Symphony featuring Angelo Xiang Yu, 2021 juror and winner of the Oslo 2010 Senior 1st Prize, and conducted by Jahja Ling. The symphony will offer a repeat performance on May 15 at 8 p.m.

That’s not all – there are more amazing concerts to follow during the prestigious 10-day violin competition. In addition to several performances from the Richmond Symphony, Menuhin will feature Sphinx Virtuosi, former Menuhin champions, and exceptional performers from around the globe.

And of course, Menuhin also offers multiple days of nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat competition from the best youth violinists in the world – all streaming through VPM online, on radio, and on television. VPM Music’s very own Mike Goldberg will host the semi-finals on May 15 — and be on the lookout for a couple of violinists from Down Under to make an unexpected appearance.

To see all the fantastic Menuhin programs and viewing times, go to their online schedule.

Known as the “Olympics of the violin,” the Menuhin Competition is the world's leading international competition for young violinists. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s competition, hosted here in Richmond, will be entirely virtual.

Young violinists selected from around the world will perform via video recital for the jury and for a global audience. The repertoire covers three centuries including works by Bach, Kreisler, Mozart, Paganini, Rode, Schubert and Telemann as well as each Senior competitor’s choice of a recently composed work for solo violin.

Tickets are available for the in-person concerts performed by the Richmond Symphony on May 14 & 15. Social distancing guidelines will be in place. All other concerts, including the closing Menuhin Competition Gala Presentation on May 23, are free and streaming online, on radio, and on television. The Richmond Symphony concerts will be recorded, and portions of the performance will be featured during the closing gala.

The Menuhin Competition Richmond 2021 will be produced, streamed and televised by VPM. VPM Music will also broadcast The Competition locally on 107.3 FM and 93.1 FM, as well as streamed digitally online. Competition events can be seen on the  Menuhin Competition Richmond 2021 website, YouTube Channel, and VPM’s Menuhin website.
