And just like that, September is here, classes are starting, and with the celebration of Labor Day we usher in new programs, new school clothes, and a new season of performances and exhibits in RVA. As you tuck away all those warm memories of this past summer, look forward to the new arts & culture experiences that the fall holds. The best is yet to come!

1. ARTIST TALK WITH DUANE MICHALS

University of Richmond Museums brings portraitist Duane Michals to discuss his exhibit, Duane Michals: The Portraitist. The in-person discussion with Michals speaking virtually, will be moderated by Jeffrey Allison of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition at the Harnett Museum of Art at University of Richmond presents the first comprehensive overview of inventive photographic portraits by one of the medium’s most influential artists. Best known as a pioneer who broke away from established traditions of documentary photography in the 1960s, Michals is widely recognized for his ability to navigate between imposing his style and allowing his sitters to express themselves, and for the sequences he assembles to convey personal visual narratives, often adding handwritten messages and poems on the photographic print surface. The exhibition runs from August 24 through November 18, 2022. No registration required for this free event.

4. MOTHER INDIA | ARTIST TALK WITH RUCHI GUPTA

Ceramic artist Ruchi Gupta’s vessels carry poems and light, merging joy and reflection with form and function. Her work explores the fluidity that comes by being in the moment, in a state of flow. The drawings, brushwork or carving all start with a dot and grow on their own. Each piece is layered, unique, and are fired minimum of three times. Ruchi was born and raised in India, and after completing her engineering and MBA degrees, she worked in corporate IT for a decade. For the past nine years she has been working as a full-time ceramic artist in her home studio in Richmond. Join Gallery5 as they bring Gupta on First Fridays to talk about her work. The Richmond Public Library’s Main Branch offers four new exhibits for First Fridays RVA: See It, Click It shows photos of the Richmond area, wildlife, and abstract photography by Richmond photographer Robert Papas; To Reward Investigation featuring a group of large contemporary landscapes by Fluvanna County painter Lindsay Nolting; Art Together brings a group exhibition created by participant artists in Art on Wheels' art therapeutic program; and 50 Years of Art & Photography offers a retrospective from 1972 to present by Richmond artist and photographer Lew Lott. 7. TREASON TRIAL OF AARON BURR COURT END TOUR

One of the first legal spectacles in America, the Treason Trial of Aaron Burr placed the focus of the nation to Richmond, Virginia, to see how Chief Justice John Marshall would decide the fate of former Vice President Aaron Burr. Please join Preservation Virginia’s John Marshall House and The Valentine’s Wickham House for a look at the homes of the presiding judge of the trial, John Marshall, and one of Aaron Burr’s attorneys, John Wickham, during the 215th anniversary weekend of the legal battle. Learn about the background of this 1807 legal spectacle, Marshall’s definition of “treason,” his tangential battle with President Thomas Jefferson, and ultimately Marshall’s decision in the trial. anne's Visual Art Studio gallery presents ITALOSCAPES, a solo exhibition of hand-cut mixed media works of art and fine art prints by Nickolai Walko. Come out on First Fridays as the gallery transforms into a fun evening of art, light refreshments, and Italo disco! ITALOSCAPES is an inviting portrayal of Nickolai Walko's most recent hand-cut Italian landscape motifs. The title references the 1970s/80s music genre, Italo disco, while the composition, colors, and forms are reminiscent of the mid 20th century. No registration required for this free event.


10. STORIES AT THE MUSEUM: BRAVE GIRL – CLARA & THE SHIRTWAIST MAKER’S STRIKE OF 1909

Aimed at early elementary learners, The Virginia Museum of History & Culture’s educator-led Stories at the Museum program features a read-aloud storytime in one of the related museum galleries, paired with a craft activity! September’s read is Brave Girl – Clara & The Shirtwaist Maker’s Strike of 1909 and participants will be making a Fabric Scrap Paper Doll. Purchase tickets online.
