Assistant Digital News Editor

VPM News is searching for a journalist energized by the pace of daily news and passionate about reporting, producing and editing digital-first articles to be our Assistant Digital News Editor. This web-first role rotates between daily copy-editing and digital production for VPM News’ website, alongside the development of a Central Virginia–focused news beat. You should be comfortable communicating with numbers and words, and have an understanding of solutions journalism and data journalism as well as experience working with data sets. This person will be our go-to maker of data visualizations to better enhance coverage overall. This full-time position with benefits reports to one of the VPM News editors.

A team player comfortable making quick decisions, the Assistant Digital News Editor is responsible for editing digital stories and products, assisting with newsletter creation and updating the homepage regularly. Long-range projects will include general assignment or enterprise reporting, data visualizations, FOIA requests, and data analysis to support enterprise reporting and research.
 
VPM is Virginia’s home for public media, headquartered in Richmond to serve Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. The VPM News team produces award-winning journalism from our NPR affiliate with distribution across digital channels to more than 2 million people in VPM’s coverage area.  As an independent, nonprofit service, we strive to create and serve a more informed public.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years’ experience working in journalism:
    • You’ve been a reporter or worked in production for another outlet.
    • You have a portfolio of clips and references.
    • You have a solid grasp of news ethics and at least a familiarity with Associated Press or NPR style.
    • You are committed to, or are at least highly interested in learning about, the importance of solutions-based journalism in a turbulent media landscape.
  • At least 1 year working in web production, social media and other offsite or emerging platforms.
  • Experience working with Tableau, Datawrapper, Adobe Creative Suite or another data visualization medium.
  • Able to learn and work with CMS and SEO best practices.
  • Able to balance multiple priorities, projects and tasks.
  • Public media experience is a plus. This position is primarily geared toward working on content for the web, and candidates interested in learning the radio side of things are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Grove, Brightspot, Airtable, Microsoft Office and/or Mailchimp is a plus.
  • Position is based in our Central Virginia newsroom, with a location preference for Richmond. Candidates must be based in (or willing to relocate to) Central Virginia and able to travel between home and Richmond on a regular basis. 

Hiring Salary: $55,000
