TV Programming Director

Our Programming Director serves as the primary point of coordination for all television programming and streaming services, including schedules, logs and communications. This role understands the public media broadcasting process including rights windows, media acquisitions and the philosophies of scheduling breaks and programs to serve our audiences on the TV broadcast platforms. This role will also lead the growth of our digital streaming service to meet our audiences where they are. This role will provide insights and direction for how to grow audiences on our streaming platforms.

VPM is a public media organization serving Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Our teams produce documentaries, TV series and digital content. The VPM News team produces award-winning journalism for our NPR and PBS stations with distribution across our digital channels to over 2 million people in VPM’s coverage area. VPM Music is home to a 24/7 blend of classical, jazz and world music serving the Richmond region. Additionally, VPM has recently acquired a 40-year-old weekly publication and website, Style Weekly, that covers arts and culture. As an independent, non-profit service, we strive to create and serve a more informed public.

RESPONSIBILITIES                                    
• Leads and coordinates scheduling of programs collaborating with team and program services.
• Develops effective strategies for programming department.
• Fields support calls, email, and/or other communications from viewers with inquiries regarding programs and TV broadcast/streaming issues.
• Identifies, investigates, and resolves programming problems to solve issues.
• Serves as primary contact for all vendors & services for programming department.
• Sets appropriate benchmarks for TV/Digital goals.
• Collaborates closely with Communications and Digital teams for coordinating assets.
• Coordinates with operations, sales & programming teams regarding schedules, logs and overall performance.
• Supervises Programming Manager.
• Provides VPM internal teams with periodic updates regarding programming strategies and results.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Three years’ experience in television broadcast programming.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage time sensitive, high-pressure situations.
• Ability to manage and promote vendor relationships.
• Ability to manage a team and promote a positive working environment.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
• Strong sense of discretion and confidentiality required.

Hiring Salary: $68,000
