One of the region’s most anticipated musical festivals arrives in Richmond later this month ... and VPM will be there! The Richmond Folk Festival celebrates its 20th year and VPM is proud to broadcast the performances live from the festival, as well as welcome festival-goers to our tent across from the Altria stage.
The Richmond Folk Festival begins on Friday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m.
At the VPM tent, attendees will have the opportunity to record radio break introductions for VPM News and VPM Music shows. VPM news reporters and music show hosts will be on-hand to talk with festival attendees, chat about news and VPM programs, and collect story ideas. (So, if you want to meet the VPM reporter or music host whose voice you always hear on the radio, stop by our tent!) Additionally, VPM will be gathering people’s ideas for how history and music shape each other – we want to hear what you think!
Want to celebrate the Folk Festival a little early? VPM has three ways to help get your folk vibe going:
- Brice Maddox and Annie Parnell have a two-part interview with local artist Ms. Jaylin Brown. Part I airs during The Chill Factor on September 20 and Part II airs on The Undertow on September 25.
- VPM Music will be playing selections from this year’s artists across VPM Music shows leading up to the festival.
- VPM Music hosts teamed up to compile a Spotify playlist of their favorite tracks by artists on this year’s Folk Festival bill.
Don’t have a chance to head to downtown Richmond for the Folk Festival? You can check it out remotely by listening to our live broadcast on VPM Music on the radio at 107.3 FM, 93.1 FM and 88.9-HD2 or vpm.org/folk.
In celebration of the Richmond Folk Festival’s twentieth anniversary, VPM, Venture Richmond and the Richmond Folk Festival created The Sounds of Culture: 20 years of the Richmond Folk Festival, a documentary that looks back at the festival’s roots and how it shaped the event that is so well-attended and fondly regarded today. It can be seen online at vpm.org/folk and on broadcast on VPM PBS Richmond, VPM PBS Charlottesville, VPM PBS Harrisonburg and livestreamed on the PBS app. The documentary premiered on September 17 and will be shown again on Sunday, September 22 at 5:00 p.m. and then on Thursday, September 26 at 8:00 p.m.
