Awards season is just beginning and VPM is starting it off by bringing home some hardware! The VPM News team received six awards for excellence in reporting at the 2024 Virginias AP Broadcasters (VAPB) Awards. The winners were announced on April 5 during an awards luncheon at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
"VPM News already knows that Patrick and Jahd are hardworking journalists who deserve to be recognized for their efforts and skills, and I am extremely delighted that the Virginias AP Broadcasters chose to honor them this year,” said VPM News managing editor Dawnthea M. Price Lisco.
The annual competition drew 611 entries from 34 different news organizations representing Virginia and West Virginia.
VPM's first-place award winners in the Radio I/Metro division include:
- Best MMJ/One-Person Band Reporter: Patrick Larsen
- Best Reporter: Jahd Khalil
Additionally, VPM had four second-place finishes in the Radio I/Metro division, including:
- Best Documentary or In-Depth: Megan Pauly, Jahd Khalil and Whittney Evans for "Protest Policies at Virginia's Colleges”
- Best QA (One-on-One) Interview: Dave Cantor and Whittney Evans for "How Virginia Plays Into the History of Campaign Finance Laws”
- Best Old Dominion Heritage: Megan Pauly and Shaban Athuman for "Prince Edward Schools That Helped Usher in Brown vs Board Still in Disrepair”
- Excellence in Public Service Through Journalism: Dave Cantor and Shaban Athuman for "Richmond City's Meals Tax"
