Voters chose a mix of incumbents and newcomers.

In addition to the races for federal and statewide office, Harrisonburg held contests for three City Council seats and three School Board seats in Tuesday's election.

City Council

Mayor Deanna Reed — the top vote-getter in the race — and Vice Mayor Laura Dent retained their seats on the council. Reed was first elected in 2016 and has served as the mayor since 2019; Dent was elected in 2020 and is in her second year as vice mayor.

Nasser Alsaadun will be the first refugee elected to serve on the Harrisonburg City Council. He moved to the Friendly City in 2008 from Iraq.

School Board

Kaylene Seigle has retained her seat on the Harrisonburg City School Board. This will be her third term on the panel.

She will be joined by Tim Howley and Matt Snyder, who ran as a liberal bloc alongside Hazzar Pastor Perdomo and Matt Snyder.

Board members Deb Fitzgerald and Tom Domonoske decided not to seek re-election.

Constitutional Amendment

Virginia voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment expanding eligibility for a property tax exemption given to surviving spouses of military members.

Previously, only the spouses of service members killed in action were eligible for the benefit. The amendment widens eligibility to the spouses of service members killed while on active duty.
