In Your Ear Episode 61: The Justin Kauflin Trio II
Maryland born, Virginia Beach bred Justin Kauflin is musical marvel. Sightless since age 11, he would dedicate his life to seeing the world through the sounds and colors he could create on a keyboard, first joining us at In Your Ear studios in November of 2013 with Tidewater’s Jae Sinnett Trio. Justin would catch the ear of legendary trumpeter Clark Terry and be featured in the heart rending documentary Keep On Keepin’ On. That association would lead to Justin’s current status as a protégé of iconic producer Quincy Jones, with whom he’s toured the world and released a 2nd album Coming Home. Justin’s trio with VCU alums Billy Williams and Chris Smith would play our In Your Ear series in September of 2015, so when it came time to get him back to Richmond, we wanted to give them a little more room and partnered again with RVA’s Tin Pan on October 31st of 2018. This version of the trio would again include Richmonder Billy Williams on drums and feature New York’s Evan Gregor on electric bass.
In Your Ear offers a chance to discover new artists and appreciate the “in the moment” creativity and inspiration that only live music can provide. Studio A is a “great room,” a haven for artists with intimate, friendly and informed audiences and peerless audio fidelity, thanks to engineers Carlos Chafin, Andrea Stefl and Paul Bruski. JAMinc president Tim Timberlake produces the programs covering a wide range of genres including bluegrass, jazz, blues, old time, Celtic, gospel and singer-songwriters of many styles.
