Members of the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums recently performed live on WCVE Music. They were in town to discuss the upcoming Virginia International Tattoo, which is presented annually as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. The term Tattoo "evolved from a European tradition dating back to the 17th century when Low Country innkeepers would cry "Doe den tap toe!" - "Turn off the taps!" as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signaled a return to quarters."
The Tattoos across the world today produce a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. Each one is influenced by the culture of the country they represent.
This year's Virginia International Tattoo takes place April 25th through 28th at Scope Arena in Norfolk.
Many thanks to Stewart Pittman, Larissa Sasgen, Emily Luck and Brodie Adams for providing live music for my show!
Yours in good music,
Mike Goldberg Classical Music Host, 93.1 and 107.3 WCVE Music
