Here’s a recap of the top stories on the morning of June 18, 2025:

Unofficial: Jay Jones wins Democratic attorney general nomination
Reported by VPM News’ Jahd Khalil

Former Norfolk Del. Jay Jones was ahead in preliminary results for the Democratic attorney general primary Tuesday night, according to a call by the Associated Press.

While the Democratic race for lieutenant governor was too close to call based on preliminary results, state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D–Chesterfield) — holding a narrow lead over former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and state Sen. Aaron Rouse (D–Virginia Beach) — claimed victory. (All election results are unofficial until certified by the state.)

Virginia’s gubernatorial nominees, who were not on primary ballots, made their opening arguments for the general election as the primaries drew to a close, promising affordability and differing versions of stability, casting their opponent as extreme, and laying out stark policy differences on cultural and economic issues.

Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears said at an event Tuesday night that she would be a continuation of Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration, vowing to broaden school choice and invoking a hard line on immigration.

Former US Rep. Abigail Spanberger, Earle-Sears' Democratic opponent, said Monday she would be a bulwark against changes at the federal level: “I know that people all across Virginia are tired of the political chaos coming out of Washington right now. They're tired of the chaos we see every day."

Unofficial results: Virginia 2025 primary elections
Reported by VPM News

VPM News (with an assist from the Associated Press) kept track of primaries across Central Virginia on Tuesday. In addition to the lieutenant governor and attorney general races, Virginia held House of Delegates primaries in 15 districts and several local nominating contests.

In Richmond, Democratic voters backed incumbent Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachin and Sheriff Antionette Irving — neither of whom is set to face Republican opposition in November.

Charlottesville Democrats, voting in their first ranked choice primary, returned Mayor Juandiego Wade to the city council, but opted for newcomer Jen Fleisher over Vice Mayor Brian Pinkston.

And Albemarle County voters chose substitute Sally Duncan as the successor to longtime Jack Jouett Supervisor Diantha McKeel.
