The Shanghai String Quartet is the subject of "Behind the Strings," a documentary film released in 2020. The film will be shown in Richmond this Sunday, September 12th as part of the Richmond International Film Festival.
You many remember the quartet from its many years as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Richmond. "Behind the Strings" takes us through their journey, from the Cultural Revolution and the original four fleeing west, to their lives today on stage and at home.
Executive Producer Michael Peroff and violinist Weigang Li joined me to talk about the process of putting the film together.
