The Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet has released the second volume of their series "Uncovered," which aims to bring greater awareness and programming of the music by historically important Black composers. This album features the works of Florence Price and includes four string quartets and two piano quintets, as well as the Negro Folksongs in Counterpoint and Five Folkfongs in Counterpoint. Several of the works have not previously been recorded. In the words of the quartet, "Price faced extreme obstacles in her lifetime, however, her compositional output is vast despite the many barriers placed in her path. The six works in Uncovered, Volume 2 highlight her most productive years and unique cultural identity."
Violist Paul Laraia joined me to discuss this particular release, as well as the various collaborators on the Uncovered project.
Yours in good music,
