Let's go on a (musical) road trip!

vintage car and guitar
We'll step off John’s Porch to take you on a road trip this week.

I spent close to 20 years on the road. I wasn’t a long haul trucker, but I drove myself all over this amazing country. I saw things I would never have seen otherwise and met some wonderful people that fate put into my life. I was a one man traveling show, taking my stand up comedy hither and yon.

And I confess, it was (mostly) a wonderful time.

I still look at highways with a wonder where they lead. I have paper maps in my car that I have read like novels, tracing the roads with my fingers (when I’m not driving of course) and wonder what adventures I could find in these locations.

So, I thought it would be fun to celebrate the road and those who wander down them. We’re not going to follow the yellow brick road to Oz, just simple roads that may take us from here to there. Some roads may not even be physical, just metaphorical.

And I know not everyone shares my love of the road, but I hope you’ll stay with me and just enjoy the music.

In the first hour, we have music from Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Little Feat and more. That’s just the appetizer.

In hour two, we have music from Alison Krauss, Johnny Adams, Steve Winwood, Nanci Griffith and one set dedicated to the wandering spirit.

I hope you will join me this Sunday, October 2nd, from ten to noon, on John’s Porch. We have plenty of room and we would love to have you over for company. You can find us on one of these great VPM Stations: 93.1 and 107.3 VPM-Music and 88.9 HD2, Richmond, and streaming online at VPM.org.
