Celebrating Peter Gabriel and saying goodbye to David Crosby on the next "John's Porch"

acoustic guitar cropped view

I hope you will join me for John’s Porch this Saturday and Sunday from ten until noon as we have a couple of great shows I’m excited to share with you. There’s our usual mixed bag of fun with blues, country, Americana, bluegrass, rock and all sorts of music to put a smile on your face and start your toes a-tapping.

First off, we’ve got a celebration of Peter Gabriel who is releasing a new song every full moon of 2023. It’s an unusual way to market oneself, but leave it to Gabriel to shake things up a little bit. I haven’t gotten a copy of his first song yet, but I do have three others of some of his best post-Genesis work for you.

Then there’s some more of Virginia Corner where we’ll shine a spotlight on artists with a Virginia connection. This week, I’m featuring Michael Macadam, Akelah Simone, and Carol “Torch” Torricelli. I’ll put these artists up against anybody and I’m delighted to play their music.

Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to David Crosby. Crosby is a two-time inductee into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame that we recently lost and I’ve got a special tribute for him from some of his solo work. I’ve played some of his work with both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and will do so again in the future, but for now, we’ll just concentrate on his solo work.

There’s Americana with Dave and Phil Alvin, Billy Strings, Steve Earle and Peter Rowan with Tony Rice. There’s Don Henley and the incredible duo of Mark Knopfler with Emmylou Harris. Plus blues from Katie Webster and Keb’ Mo’. And there’s great music from the likes of George Harrison and Leon Russell.

Speaking of Emmylou Harris, she’s also teamed up with Steve Earle and Randy Scruggs and Iris DeMent. I think she has a gorgeous voice and I can’t wait to share her work with you!

We’ll get lost in the 1970’s with Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, and The Kinks, and we’ll sample sides from a couple of headliners for the Virginia Arts Festivals Summer Music Event; The Wood Brothers and Keb’ Mo’.

If you haven’t yet discovered John’s Porch, we would love to have your company one day, or both if you can swing it. Each show is different, and we try to play a mix of rock, blues, country, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, world music, and just about anything that makes you happy.

You can find us Saturday and Sunday from ten until noon. We’re taking over the weekend with different shows for each day. I hope you will join me, and bring along your friends, as we continue to explore familiar and new artists of all stripes. We’re on VPM Music 93.1 and 107.3 and online at VPM.org.
