This fall 2017 IYE season opener is basically the 2nd set of a singular evening of music that was presented in conjunction with the Virginia Folklife Program, a perennially favorite part of the Richmond Folk Festival each year. Recorded in February of 2017, it’s led by Virginia’s Folklorist Jon Lohman, who gathered a potent group of performers around the venerable Sherman Holmes, the surviving member Christchurch, Virginia’s Holmes Brothers. Along with brother Wendell and brother-in-music Willie “Popsy” Dixon, who have both passed on since their Folk Fest appearance in 2013, the Holmes Brothers garnered a huge following worldwide for their rootsy blend of gospel, country and soul. Sherman continues to carry the family torch, burning brightly as the Sherman Holmes Project, which fittingly includes Richmond’s gospel queens, the Ingramettes, still carrying on after the passing of their matriarch Maggie Ingram in 2015, and RVA multi-instrumentalist Jared Pool.
