VDOT moves several regional Smart Scale proposals forward
Reported by VPM News’ Ian Stewart
In 2021, dozens of Virginia localities began applying for state grants to fund major and minor road upgrades through the Smart Scale program.
Some of the proposals include a possible upgrade to Hull Street's sidewalks near the Mayo Bridge in downtown Richmond, as well as the creation of a two-mile path connecting Southside neighborhoods near George Wythe High School.
Soon, a state board will decide which projects get the green light.
Hopewell issued next steps to resolving years' worth of missing, late financial records
Reported by VPM News’ Sterling Barbett
On Tuesday, the City of Hopewell held a special meeting to address its options after years of unfinished or late audits from 2015 onward. Due to those missing or incomplete records, the city cannot currently provide bonds for capital improvements, as first reported by The Progress-Index.
As State Finance Secretary Stephen Cummings told Hopewell councilors Tuesday, the situation “has been burning at a five-alarm level for a long time.”
