RRHA hires private security to patrol public housing
Reported by VPM News’ Dave Cantor
The Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority has hired a private security company to patrol the city's public housing neighborhoods, the organization announced late last week. The move comes as part of CEO Steven Nesmith's program of "hope, jobs and security."
Sentry Force Security — headquartered in Fairfax, with offices in Richmond and Virginia Beach — will patrol the properties. The company currently works with the Norfolk housing authority and in the past has worked with Charlottesville's as well.
Richmond Electoral Board walks back early voting closures
Reported by VPM News’ Ben Paviour
The GOP-controlled Richmond Electoral Board voted unanimously Friday to offer three early voting locations for 45 days ahead of the general election in November, reversing a decision it made last week to shutter two of the sites.
The move comes after Richmond’s city attorney said the board lacked legal authority to close early voting satellite locations at downtown’s City Hall and Southside’s Hickory Hill Community Center.
The three-member board also voted Friday along party lines not to offer early voting on Sundays, citing staff fatigue.
