The Richmond Symphony continues their Pops series this weekend with a performance of "The Resurrection Mixtape" Saturday evening, February 3rd at 8:00pm in the Carpenter Theatre. The program is said to be "a transformative exploration of life, death, legacy, struggle, and triumph," which fuses the music of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony with that of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Included in the performance are “Hypnotize,” “Dear Mama,” “California Love,” “Juicy,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” “Everyday Struggle,” and more.
The man behind the project is Steve Hackman, who is a composer, conductor, producer and arranger with a strong classical background. He and I had the chance to discuss the evolution of this program on "An Hour with the Richmond Symphony." By the way, he was also the creator of "Brahms X Radiohead," which the orchestra performed back in September 2022.
Do take a listen to our chat and I hope you have a chance to check out Steve's work.
Yours in good music,
Mike Goldberg
