What’s happening on John’s Porch?

I hope you will join me this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday from ten until noon, for John’s Porch as I will present some fun and exciting new music along with some great classics and maybe one or two surprises.

On Saturday, I plan on an hour of brand new music, mostly Americana with a little bit of blues, a bluegrass take on one of America’s best known and well loved pieces of music. You’ve never heard Gershwin performed like this! Plus we’ve got something new from our friend Jon Spear who lives in Charlottesville where he creates great music.

Aside from being a great friend, Jon was the driving force behind one of my favorite blues bands and he even wrote a song called “Time For The Blues” which he included on his album “B-Side Of My Life.” Since the Jon Spear Band broke up (amicably, all four guys still support each other in their new work) Jon has turned his attention to his Americana writings and I’m going to share one of his new songs!

I think you’re going to like it!

In hour two of Saturday’s show, I have a conversation with another good friend, Dave Revels, the lead singer for The Persuasions along with other musical projects he has going. We had a great time discussing his Motown Revue, how he got started in the business, as well as what’s going on with that great acapella group.

For fun, I’m throwing in a couple of songs by The Persuasions, one from the original lineup and one from the current group.

As part of our celebration of Black History Month, all of our performers in hour two are African American with songs from Bob Marley (okay, he’s Jamaican), Bobby Rush and Buddy Guy. Plus R&B and rock from Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, and Little Richard.

I’m still working on Sunday’s show, so even I don’t know what I’m going to play. I do have some New Wave music, some fok, and we’re going to sample the song that ignited the Grammys this year.

So, climb up on the biggest metaphorical porch in the world, kick back, and sing along. I’ve got a lot of things I think you will enjoy. You can find us in the Richmond area at 93.1 and 107.3. Everywhere else in the world should stream us at vpm.org. I’m always glad for your company.
