Waynesboro officials claim electoral policy violates state constitution
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen
Two members of the Waynesboro Electoral Board are suing the Virginia Department of Elections and State Board of Elections to change how votes are counted — and threatening not to certify 2024 election results there.
In the suit, Waynesboro board chair Curtis Lilly and vice chair Scott Mares argue that state policy on vote counting — specifically, sealing votes after they’re tabulated by counting machines — violates a provision of the state constitution.
That provision says ballot boxes or counting machines “shall be kept in public view and shall not be opened, nor the ballots canvassed nor the votes counted, in secret.”
New tool measures quality of interactions in daycare, preschool programs
Reported by VPM News’ Megan Pauly
The Virginia Department of Education recently launched a website to help parents learn more about the quality of their child’s daycare or preschool classroom.
Classroom observations in all of the participating programs found that 98% of providers are meeting or exceeding expectations.
In a statement, Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons said families will be able to use the tool “to make informed decisions when exploring and choosing an early childhood program for their children.”
