Richmond’s registrar expects busy Election Day and aftermath
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen

With less than a week until Election Day (6 DAYS), local registrars are gearing up for a very, very busy time.

Keith Balmer, general registrar for the City of Richmond, highlighted some of the changes election officials made in preparation: “Typically, we use about 600 or 700 election officers. For this election, we're going to have almost twice that.”

The registrar also told VPM News that new state rules may slow down the way absentee ballots are counted.

Early voting is open through Saturday, Nov. 2. Election Day is on Nov. 5 – and absentee ballots postmarked by 7 p.m. on Election Day will be accepted at their local elections office until after noon on Friday, Nov. 8.

How could Richmond’s next mayor impact abortion access?
Reported by VPM News’ Adrienne Hoar McGibbon

Virginia is the only remaining Southern state with relatively few restrictions on abortion, which has made Richmond a destination for people seeking reproductive care since the U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned the federal right to abortion set in Roe v. Wade.

In 2018, the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood performed 2,560 abortions in the city, according to data from the state’s health department. Now the nonprofit says it performs more than twice as many abortions — about 5,500 a year.

VPM News asked the five candidates looking to succeed Levar Stoney as mayor to weigh in on how they would work to protect and expand access to reproductive health care in Richmond if elected.
