Here’s a recap of the top stories on the morning of Nov. 20, 2024:
Dominion requests bill hikes to cover offshore wind, early SMR costs
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen
Dominion Energy recently filed requests with State Corporation Commission regulators to charge typical residential customers an additional $2.89 each month to cover the expenses associated with its offshore wind farm and early development of small modular nuclear reactors.
Dominion also submitted a supplement to its long-term planning document, which was ordered by state regulators who sought more information on the impact of data centers.
Srinivasan, Harding to square off in state Senate special election
Reported by VPM News’ Jahd Khalil
Democrats and Republicans recently held firehouse primaries to choose their nominees for a special election for the state Senate seat formerly held by Congressman-elect Suhas Subramanyam.
Del. Kannan Srinivasan (D-Loudoun), who Subramanyam has endorsed, will face off against Republican Tumay Harding, a former teacher and self-described education activist who became involved in local education politics after alleged misconduct by one of her daughters’ teachers.
If Harding wins the seat, it would bring the Virginia Senate to a 20–20 split, effectively flipping control of the chamber to the GOP, since Lt. Gov Winsome Earle-Sears would be able to cast tie-breaking votes.
Srinivasan’s resignation will require another special election. Approximately 1 in 5 of Virginia’s state legislators first took office through special elections.
