Virginia Teachers Rally on Capitol

Today is a professional development day for Richmond teachers. “So as part of teacher's learning and development we welcome and encourage them to make their voices heard.” That’s the district’s Superintendent Jason Kamras. He’s also asking for more state support for things like higher teacher pay. But Kamras admits localities have to show their commitment to funding these things, too. Last week, he announced $13 million in central office cuts to make room for the local share of a 5% teacher pay raise. “I believe when we ask for more money, we have to first demonstrate that we've been responsible with the money that we've got.” Other districts like Henrico County Public Schools are also encouraging teachers to attend the rally – it’s a clerical day today there. Some teachers will rally at 11 AM in Monroe Park before marching to the state capitol for another rally at noon, while others will spend the morning in meetings with lawmakers.
